Impulse and Stupidity

No one commits stupidity, it happens. Only when something we do, goes wrong, we call it as stupidity. When the things go as per our plans or for that matter some action that we take impromptu succeeds, we do not call that as stupidity. But only when the plans do not work or worse, sudden action taken at that time, fails, we curse it as stupidity.

Stupidity need not be in the eye of the beholder. It is something that is not desired by the event itself. It is not a relative term. It is not the stupidity a person calls for the action of another person. It is the stupidity in nature. When stupidity takes place, things do go wrong as an event and not as pertaining to that event.

Whenever things do go wrong, we either justify the act saying I did what I thought was appropriate that time or we simply regret our act. In either case, the stupidity stands stall, glaring at us. If we are honest enough and do not wish to repeat the same or similar act in the future, we would develop certain intelligence towards handling such things.

Now look at the intelligence. Intelligence has to be committed, it doesn’t happen on its own.

Intelligence is also an absolute thing. This does not belong to one person. When enough of intelligence exists around the events, things go the way they are supposed to go. Our endeavor should be to merge with the intelligence around us and help ourselves get the desired result. The desire also should have intelligence and not be stupid to ask for unimaginable things to happen.

When we merge ourselves with the existing intelligence, we already know how to handle the situation. The appropriateness is decided by the requirement of the event and not by our convenience. The intelligence doesn’t necessarily accumulate by past experience and learning. Of course they can be referred to, but there are always surprises. Life offers situations beyond all experiences and cognition.

When we do the things as the situation demands without recognizing necessary intelligent thought around it, it may anyway go wrong. How do we react to any given situation depends on the thought we give around the situation and not only to the situation. Taking time at the time of the situation may help us think. Revisiting the set goals and objectives might help. Or overall understanding of the situation will lead to the required action.

Intelligence comes with clarity of the mind. Confusion is not stupidity but lack of intelligence is. In the state of confusion, we do not do things that come to our mind. In stead, we seek clarity in ourselves. Clarity comes by merging ourselves with intelligence. Sincere, patient and truthful efforts take us to this path of merging with intelligence.

- VV

Holi

26th March 2013

Holi : The views on this festival are as diverse as its colors. Think of a locality full of harmony and peace, people loving to see each other's faces, share sweets and happiness with them, playing colors in fun, clean and hygienic way, keeping in mind there is no vulgar wastage of natural resources, it's perfectly fine to play holi.

The other scene is - people want to take revenge on others by smearing them with what not, in the name of holi, thus depleting water even more, not enjoying what they do and not leaving others to their state by dragging them to play, indulging in exchange of unwelcome words and thoughts... it's perfectly unnecessary to play holi.

Whether we help parched areas by not playing holi? It's the same question as whether we help malnourished children by not wasting food.

To me, festival is when we bring smile on the faces of the smile deprived.

-VV

The Mirror:

At once, mirror saw me for a moment. No sooner the eyes met, than the mirror resorted to evasive looks and avoided direct eye contact with me. I had bewilderment mixed with sheepishness. Bewilderment because I wondered why the mirror was not looking at me. Sheepishness because I was looking at someone who is turning eyes away from me. With more intent, when I examined deeper, I observed a kind of inexplicable pain and burden of mistake that was not committed. When I opted to ask mirror about it, it thought of something and opened its mouth. There was no voice. There were boredom, disregard and disgust of talking about the same thing time and again with me. I came out of bathroom hearing some sound near the door.

A thoughtful new year.

When the busily sleeping TIME turns its side,
One year is called as old and another one as new.
Along with that, we proceed to be one year older in cognition.
Trying to redefine the failures, rediscover the possibilities.
Munching on our success, relishing our happy moments.
With new rays of hope in our eyes for the coming year.
With fear mixed excitement of the unknown and preparedness for the well-known.
We make and break resolutions, we fight with others and self.
We fall in love, break few hearts, reinvent some relationships.
If mundaneness was living, we would rather be dead by now.

Let's live each day towards being ourselves, taking a stand for others.
Causing happiness for self, family and society.

Wish you all happy new year.

zulf-e-jaana ki daastaan

No doubt, I've been always fascinated by the beauty of women but more by the way it's been eulogized in urdu poetry. Among all the exquisite parts of a woman's body, her hair is something that catches attention of the writers and readers alike. At the mention of ज़ुल्फ़, poetry lover loses himself in imagining fragrant, thick, wet, long and intoxicating hair of an unknown beauty. Hair doesn't need a face to be imagined. Tress is such a unique part of a woman's body that doesn't require adornment. It is beautiful the way it is, whether it is left loose or tied in a particular fashion.

I for one, have been admiring the beauty of curls and the beauty of praising them in urdu poetry. The following are few couplets I came across which I thought I should list for other poetry lovers to relish.

The combination of two legends - Javed Akhtar and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan created some enthralling music and lyrics that one would hardly forget. In one of landmark ghazals of Akhtar sahab - AFREEN,  see how beautifully he has mentioned the variance of tresses.

Where as he works out permutations of venerating hair of his beloved, he says it's so difficult to put the beauty in words in compliments.  He calls the swirls as shadow, a cloud, a scourge. If the hair is open it may bring distraught to the world and when raveled, it could ease up the living. It can spread the dark night when open and make the night going when flutters. It's a lovely shackle, silky and fragrant. It is however, not possible to praise the beloved.

One poet has written the following in taking a friendly jibe at women's tresses.

It goes like - the one who has been trapped in a ploy will never seek release as your tresses have spread such a net.

Hanging down, they kiss your face and lips, dare you have exempted your tresses a bit too much !

In another expression, one jealously exclaims,

In an attempt to grab attention of the beloved, already frustrated lover suggests her to mend her hair for heaven's sake. Dam they persistently annoy (me more than you! that is)

Akbar Allahabadi, known for his wit and humor, mentions about hair as below:

There, she's combing, unraveling intertwined tresses, here i heave an impatient breath. God forbid the complication is increasing but neither the twine is raveled nor the sigh is relieved.

Ghalib also has used Zulf in many of his couplets. In one, he describes the luck of a person whom the beauty has bestowed upon herself as -

As if, the person either sleeps, thinks and has the nights or he doesn't. Who would? on whose shoulders are resting your curls?

There are many more couplets on the beauty of hair in the form of becoming fun of it or praising it. The above are my favorites.

Droplets

Aug 30, 2012

- VV

Rain had showered an asymmetrical, yet beautiful pattern of drops on that wall. Since the wall was wet, the drops were able to clasp on to wall, standing away from each other. Spellbound by the sight, i was also thrilled to observe my reflection on all the drops. Along crashed ashore a wave of doubts. If this is natural that when I smile all reflections smile and when I frown, all reflections replicate, then why do many masks are iconified by my demeanor? Or are my reflections, interpretation of people? Or is it a disillusioning synesthesia? In those thoughts, no sooner than my finger moved on the top row of the drops on the wall, those slithered down, embracing each other as they slided, as if shedding solitude had overwhelmed their heaviness. Promptly, they were absorbed by the sod beneath. I went on looking for another such wall with matilda of my questions. -VV

June 21, 2012

Holi

Mar 8, 2012

Happy Holi.
